why are some songs played on a guitar tuned with all strings dropped down a half-step?

Why are some songs played on a guitar tuned with all strings dropped down a half-step? And why do the songwriters do so?

Some songs? Just about everything from early Van Halen. Some early Black Sabbath songs like Symptom of the Universe. Some Randy Rhoads. And alot more. It seems to make it easier the fret chords and play faster and gives the guitar a darker tone. I know some people will disagree with me. I always tune to 440A concert pitch anyway.
